Alan Weitz has been in private law practice for more than 30 years, specializing in complex commercial and residential real estate project development and financing, as well as workplace employment matters. Mr. Weitz counsels some of the leading real estate developers and management companies in the D.C. metropolitan area involving transactions totaling in excess of $1 billion and negotiates on their behalf with some of the largest financial institutions in the United States and internationally. Mr. Weitz counsels real estate developers in negotiating and consummating sophisticated transactions involving commercial office buildings, hotels, residential developments and mixed-use projects. Mr. Weitz has successfully represented clients in civil regulatory litigation in such matters as partnership and corporate organization disputes, commercial sales and real estate, class actions, international arbitration and government contracts. Mr. Weitz also advises employers on a broad range of workplace issues including discrimination, wrongful termination, sexual harassment investigations, public accommodations access and disabilities. He guides management on workplace law compliance in such areas as reductions in force and development of employment policies, and provides training at both the executive and staff levels. Mr. Weitz also represents a number of trade associations, and has served as counsel to a national task force on Diversity in Management for women and minorities and a task force for the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).
Representative Matters
Mr. Weitz's cases include a $30 million commercial lease claim affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a $70 million award for AT&T after trial in the International Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal in The Hague, and successful government contract protests before the General Accounting Office.
Noteworthy
Mr. Weitz has been admitted as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has been a member of the Labor Relations Committee of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Weitz has served as an instructor for real estate courses of the Apartment and Office Building Owners Association of Metropolitan Washington. Mr. Weitz authored several articles, including “Meeting the Challenge and Maximizing Opportunities for Employees with Disabilities” (published in The Curve), “Making Diversity Work” (published in Chain Store Age Executive), “Effect of ADA on Facility and Store Design” (published in World Coffee & Tea), and “Effect of ADA on Convenience Store Design” (published in Petroleum Marketer). In addition to his years in private practice, Mr. Weitz served as counsel on the Senate Watergate Committee investigating campaign finance matters.
